iMAGiNE GROWiNG YOUR OWN VEGETABLES YEAR ROUND iN THiS
HOME!

Banana Tree in Kirsten Jacobsen's Earthship, Greater World
Community, Taos
Behind
every glazing front in an Earthship there is the
greenhouse. Here you can not just grow nice interior
plants, you can grow your own vegetables, or even Bananas.
As you can imagine on sunny days it gets really hot behind
the glass front. Perfect for some vegetables and fruits to
grow, that would never develop in conventional houses. But
of course sun is not all you need to grow food in your
home.
The plant bed is not just a regular container with some
compost. It is where your sewage is treated. All the grey
water, which is the water from your showers, sinks and bath
tubs gets directed into the plant bed (botanical cell) in
front of your home. Here it gets cleaned while it is
serving as irrigation for the plants and CO2 from
evaporation.

Bananas growing in The Hut Earthship, Greater World
Community, Taos
The pictures above are from an Earthship in the Greater
World Community in Taos, New Mexico. The winter there is
somewhat like -20° but yet Bananas are growing inside. In
the summer it gets really hot, too hot to grow plants like
that but the sewage Containment, Treatment &
Distribution allow them to.
